The improvement of asphalt pavement by adding modifiers

Dalia Adil Rasool

Abstract

The continuous increase of the number of heavy trucks with excessive axle load, high temperatures and water damages, will cause many road,s problems such as permanent deformation and cracking of pavements which are very common in Iraq roads,to avoid these problems the properties of bitumen must be improved with the incorporation of modifiers .The using of recycled waste materials in road pavement provides enhanced performance in service .In this research polyethylene (PE)was added to the  asphalt in order to improve  the physical properties of asphalt, the proportions of the added (PE) was ( 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%)  of the asphalt weigh .The results indicate that PE modified asphalt reduced penetration values and increased softening point value compared to un modified asphalt and gave better resistance against permanent deformations and better engineering properties .
