An Experimental Study on Partial Replacement of Cement With Brick Dust(Surkhi) In Concrete

Ms. Kajal Kiran, Mr. Arbinda Sharma

Abstract

This research estimates the scope of using Brick Dust as alternate Cementing material in the modification of concrete. Brick dust is a waste product in many brick kilns. India is the second largest producer of clay fired bricks, accounting for more than 10 percent of global production. Brick dust is waste material that generated from brick klins. These wastes are dumped openly, which not only occupy land but also create environmental pollutions. These problems could be reduced by recycling these waste materials in concrete. Using brick dust as mineral admixture in concrete modify certain properties of fresh and hardened concrete and makes concrete more durble.BDW has pozzolanic properties that enables it play an important role in the strength and durability of concrete, its use in concrete will reduce the increasing challenges of scarcity and high cost of cement. Its use in concrete will help to strike a balance between the sustainability of the environment and the demand on construction due to the increase in population growth worldwide. In order to investigate properties of concrete which observed from replacement of cement with brick dust, we design concrete mixes with cement replacement by brick dust at 10%, 20% and 30%, The testing program included determination of material properties, compressive strength, consistency, water absorption etc.Concrete mixes tested at 7, 14 and 28 days. The problem of disposing this waste, it will also reduce the environmental impact which is caused by the CO2 emission from the manufacturing of the cement.
