Abstract

Twitter is increasingly being used by anti-social elements to connect to more people who sympathise with their cause.  The aim of our   work   is to leverage Twitter   data   to identify the areas in India affected by Maoists, Naxalites and Jihadists.  We attempt to identify people who are actively involved in such activities.  For ground truth, we use manually inspected dataset comprising of 400 twitter accounts (handles) of anti-social people based on their activities related to Naxalism, Maoism and Jihadism. Engagements   were  captured in  form  of  past  tweets (8000) posted  by  these  people  along  with  150 hash-tags   used. As per  results, top Mao and  Jihadi  profiles were identified  and classified as Mao activist/supporter, Jihadi  activist/supporter and Others/Cant Say.  Geographical map marking   vulnerable   areas in India   was created   and various   parameters are explained. Network   analysis   was  performed  on  the  profiles  to  identify whether   the  users  are  interconnected  with  each  other.  Entire work  was  bundled   as  an  Android   App  which  when  given  an input  Twitter  profile, marks  it as suspicious or not.
