Abstract

Computer Science finds a wide range of applications in a variety of fields. In this modern world, the use of different human senses in the field of computers is becoming more and more common and the sense of touch is no exception. Haptic technology or haptics, is a tactile feedback technology which takes advantage of a user's sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations and/or motions upon the user. The convergence of haptic technology with the understanding of human perception is opening new possibilities for immersive virtual experiences. The mechanical stimulation may be used to assist in the creation of virtual objects (objects existing only in a computer simulation), for control of such virtual objects and for the enhancement of the remote control of machines and devices. This work addresses the role of haptics in the design of systems for supporting embodiment in virtual and real environments.
