Abstract

A catastrophic landslide occurred along the up slopes of Malin village, Ambegaon Tehsil; Pune District, Maharashtra in the morning of 30-07-2014 at about 7:45 am; and claimed about 151 human lives and damaged 44 houses. The village is located along the slopes belong backwaters of Dimbhe storage reservoir. Heavy rainfall was reported in the affected area on that day and over previous one week. This landslide affected people not only economically, physically but also psychologically. Prediction of landslide hazard is very complex because a number of factors contribute to mass movements.  The understanding of this phenomenon requires  a  large  number  of  input  parameters and  analysis  techniques which are  also costly  and  time  consuming. In the present study a scientific approach has been taken to evaluate the triggering factors which caused the present landslide and further studies undertaken for future to save the human population in the affected areas having dense population along the river channel by suggesting some remedial measures also.
