Modeling Delay at Signalized Intersections in Mixed Traffic Conditions

Dr. Krishnamurthy K, Ms Sushmitha Ramireddy

Abstract

Signalized intersections are the important points within a system of any road network, where saturation flow and delay are important parameters for the evaluation of signalized intersections, which also affects the design of signal timings. Several methods have been used to estimate vehicular delay at signalised intersections. Very few studies have been conducted to estimate delay at signalized intersections under mixed traffic conditions. The aim of the present study to develop a model for delay under mixed traffic conditions. Three four legged signalized intersections in Calicut city are selected for the present study. Saturation flow is estimated by dividing the number of vehicles during saturation green period by the length of the saturated green time and expressed in PCU/hr. Delay is estimated using both licence plate and object matching methods. A non-linear model is developed in the present study for estimating the delay. The relationship between delay and different variables are identified and it is found that delay increases exponentially with flow, increases logarithmically with degree of saturation and increases linearly with percentage of heavy vehicles.
