Abstract

Infection is a disease that can be caused by the presence of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. The results of previous research showed that the ethanol extract of matoa’s stem bark has antibacterial potency. Thus, the use of such plant can be applied to liquid soap preparations as a way to protect the skin from bacterial infections. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the liquid soap of matoa’s stem bark and to know the effective concentration in inhibiting the growth of S. aureus and E. coli. Matoa’s stem bark was extracted by maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent. Antibacterial activity test using disc diffusion method. The study used RAL with 5 treatments is F1 (0.5% w/v), F2 (1.0% w/v), F3 (1.5% w/v), negative control, and positive control with 3 repetitions. The data was analyzed using ANOVA and HSD advanced test with 95% confidence level. The results obtained showed that the liquid soap of matoa’s stem bark with a concentration of 1.0% is a more effective concentration in inhibiting the growth of S. aureus bacteria, but it is not effective in inhibiting the growth of E. coli bacteria. The conclusion is the higher concentration of matoa’s stem bark extract given, the higher the antibacterial activity obtained.
