Improvement of Clayey Soil Using Pineapple Leaf Fibre

Abstract


Excessive settlement and limited strength of clays are well known for giving rise to myriad problems and difficulties in construction. Hence, there exists a need of improving the engineering properties of soil before construction by soil stabilisation techniques. Cement is the most commonly used stabilising agent to improve the strength and stiffness. However, it is relatively expensive and potentially harmful to the environment. In this study natural fibre extracted from pineapple leaves, an agricultural waste product is used as an alternative stabilising agent. The pineapple leaf fibre (PALF) was added to the soil in different proportions and strength tests were conducted. The test results indicate that the CBR and UCS values of soil increases with increase in fibre content. Thus, the soil reinforced with pineapple leaf fibre can reduce the thickness of pavement subgrade.
