Selection of Engineering Discipline in an Institute through Analytic Hierarchy Process

Abstract


The selection of an Engineering Branch is an important decision to be taken by the candidates going to enrol for engineering study. This selection has a major impact on the individual, his/her family, and the country at large. In India after 10(+2) level, admission to prime engineering colleges and courses is the first choice of the students. Enrolment of engineering students is increasing rapidly from 2008-09 in India (As per AICTE approval Report 2012-13). This paper addresses the students’ perceptions towards the Engineering course selection based on different criteria that influence a students to choose a particular branch. The aim of the present study is to find the importance of different factors which influence the choice of engineering discipline of a student and to introduce an objective index based on these weightage to help the future students to select their branch of study with the help of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The result shows that the factor “Job factor” is the most important criteria to choose an Engineering discipline.
