Abstract

This paper analyses the daily maximum water level data of five gauge stations of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh of River Dihing obtained from Central Water Commission (CWC), Govt. of India. Descriptive statistics and six probability distributions, viz., Generalized Extreme Value, Generalized Logistic, Gumbel Max, Logistic, Log Logistic and Lognormal have been proposed and ranked using Akaike Information Criterion. Parameters of the distribution are estimated using the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) method. The Q-Q Plot is also used as a goodness of fit criterion. So far as best fitted distribution for a particular station is concerned, the findings reveal that no unique distribution can be chosen for modelling water levels across the various gauge stations of River Dihing.
