Manganese Filtration Capacity of Laterite Soil

Abstract


The leaks in the industrial storage tanks and transmission pipes cause the interaction of soil with chemical. This liquid chemical waste emerges through large areas around the tanks and spreads into the soil due to the presence of any defect in tanks and connecting pipes. The flow of liquid waste through the soil, around or under the foundations, and with time, reaches groundwater and contaminates them. Manganese is the one of the major constituent of these liquid wastes that is emerges from various industries, so manganese is considered as the chemical for this study. The removal capacity is an important ecosystem service of soil for groundwater and surface water protection. By this work, the depth of soil which is required below the storage tank to filter the manganese ions in order to prevent the ground water pollution is established. The effect of manganese contamination on properties of laterite soil is also studied and reported.
