Amalgamation of nature within Compact Cities: Constrains and Potentials

Abstract

Rapid urbanization and continuous infrastructural development is threatening the existing natural areas of high ecological worth into complete destruction. The most intensified urban development is being argued to be sustainably viable, which is termed as compact city. This ‘sustainable city’ concept has changed the understanding of urban green space management and landscape planning. The compact city invites inherent physical and institutional impediments, limiting the quantity and quality of amenity vegetation. This paper is concerned to shield the nature from intrusion and incorporate greenery with built environment to create more diversified, self-contained, less polluted urban mass and preserve a hospitable and friendly milieu for plants and wildlife and ecological functions as well. From a vast literature survey, major challenges are identified andpossible urban greening strategies are being analyzed and proposed for compact cities
