CLAYEY SOIL STABILISATION USING WASTE PAPER SLUDGE ASH AND SHREDDED TYRE
Abstract
Construction of engineering structures on weak or clayey soil is considered as unsafe. Improvement of load bearing capacity of the soil may be undertaken by a variety of ground improvement techniques. In the present investigation, shredded rubber from waste and waste paper sludge ash has been chosen which was randomly included into the soil. In India, the scrap tyres are being generated and accumulated in large volumes causing an increasing threat to the environment. In order to eliminate the negative effect of these depositions and in terms of sustainable development, there is great interest in the recycling of these non-hazardous solid wastes. Waste Paper Sludge Ash (WPSA) is a waste material collected from the Paper Industry. It is produced in hundreds of thousands of tons annually in the industrialized countries and develops a major economic problem and environmental pollution problem. The investigation has been focused on the strength behaviour of soil reinforced with randomly included shredded rubber tyre and waste paper sludge ash. The investigation is carried out in two phases. In the first phase physical properties of the soil such as Specific gravity, Atterberg limits, Free swell index, Particle size distribution, Maximum dry density, and optimum moisture content study were determined. In second phase modified compaction test is carried out for various percentages of tyre and WPSA. The soil is collected from Sreekandapuram, Kannur district, Kerala.
