An Experimental Study on Reactivity of Silica Fume and Copper Slag in Concrete

Harshit Varshney

Abstract

With potential hazardous effects and increased environmental awareness, utilization of industrial by-products has become very popular alternative to disposal. Silica fume is a fine powder collected as a by-product of the silicon and ferrosilicon alloy production.Portland cement is the most important constituent of concrete and relatively high cost material. Large scale production of cement is causing depletion of natural resources and causing environmental problems. A certain percentage of silica fume as a replacement of cement and copper slag as a replacement for fine aggregate can improve some mechanical properties of concrete like compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength etc. In this study cement replaced for 15% but fine aggregate replaced at different varying percentage from 0% to 50%.  To fulfill the objective of this study some properties of concrete containing silica fume were evaluated after 7,14 and 28 days of water cuing.
