Application of AHP and Utility Methods in Optimization of Turning Process Parameters

T. Victor Babu, Ch. Maheswara Rao

Abstract

The present work explores the effect of process parameters on the multiple responses during dry turning of a medium carbon steel EN8. A series of experiments were planned as per the standard L27 orthogonal array (OA) for the three controlled parameters of speed, feed and depth of cut. The performance characteristics of Material Removal Rate (MRR), Surface Roughness (Ra) and Machining Power (Pm) are optimized simultaneously using a hybrid method called Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) combined with Utility method. From the optimization results, the optimal condition is found at 760 rpm, 0.1 mm/rev and 1.5 mm of speed, feed and depth of cut respectively.
