Groundwater Quality Study in Narnaund Town, Hisar District, Haryana

Abstract


Water is prime requirement for living beings on the planet earth. Increasing population, urbanization, industrialization and agriculture practices have put stress on quality and quantity of water resources especially on groundwater resources. In urban areas, the groundwater quality deterioration is increasing very fast due to anthropogenic activities. In the present study, the main objective was to study the groundwater quality of Narnaund Town. Narnaund Town is falling in Hisar district of Haryana at geo-cooridnates 29.2213° N latitude and 76.1407° E longitude having population of 17,242 as per 2011 census. In the present study, 10 groundwater samples were collected from different locations in the study area. Twelve chemical parameters viz. pH, alkalinity, hardness, chloride, fluoride, iron, total dissolved solids, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, phosphate and residual chlorine were analyzed using Tamilnadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) Field Water Testing Kit. In the study area, pH is 6.5 at all the sample locations. Alkalinity ranges from 140 mg/l to 260 mg/l in the study area while fluoride ranges from 0.5 mg/ l to 3.0 mg/l in the study area. Chloride ranges from 90 mg/l to 200 mg/l and hardness ranges from 130 mg/l to 230 mg/l in the study area. Total dissolved solids (TDS) ranges from 336 mg/l to 780 mg/l in the study area. Iron observed only at two sample locations at Water Works 0.2 mg/l and Near Water Works 0.3 mg/l. Nitrate ranges from 20 mg/l to 45 mg/l in the study area and Nitrite ranges from 0.2 mg/l to 0.5 mg/l. Ammonia ranges from 0.5 mg/l to 1.5 mg/l in the study area. Phosphate observed at one sample location (0.1mg/l) Near Water Works and residual chlorine ranges from 0.1 mg/l to 0.2 mg/l in the study area. The study is highly useful for understanding the groundwater quality scenario in the Narnaund Town which may facilitate the dwellers to know the suitability of groundwater for drinking purpose.
